| Test Administration (continued) Are CASAS Tests timed? Learners should have 25 minutes for CASAS appraisal subtests, and one hour for CASAS pre- and post-tests. The tests are not strictly timed, meaning that learners may finish the item they are working on when time is called. An additional 2 to 3 minutes may be allowed for this purpose. How often should I be post-testing learners? Learners should be post-tested after 40 to 60 hours of instruction, or sooner if you know they will be leaving your program. Refer to your consortium's policies regarding assessments for learners reentering the program Can learners use dictionaries or translators while taking the test? No. Can learners use scratch paper? Yes, but be sure to collect scratch paper, along with test booklets and answer sheets before the student leaves. Can learners use pens on their answer sheets? It would be best to use #2 pencils for two reasons: 1) The learner can change their answer if necessary, and 2) If using a scannable form, the scanner can read the answer sheets. What if the learner has a question about something on the test? You can't answer specific questions about items on the test. Make sure the learner understands that he/she should read the question carefully, look at the information, and choose the answer that seems best. Can I leave the room while learners are testing? No. CASAS tests are standardized tests and need to be proctored. If you need to leave the testing room, have another staff person monitor the room. Can learners get their own post-tests? No. Tests should be kept in a secure location that is only accessible to program staff. What if a student requests testing accommodations? Students can have testing accommodations if they have documentation from a certified professional indicating their need for such accommodations. What if I run out of tests? Can I copy tests? No. Tests cannot be copied. Tests can be reused, except for Forms 27 and 28. Forms 27 and 28 are consumable tests and will need to be reordered. Reorder other test forms as they show wear.
